Meat processor Gyulai Húskombinát Rt., which has made one of Hungary's best-known brands of sausage for well over one hundred years, is shutting down its hog slaughterhouse and will lay off 35% of its nearly 1,000 workers, business daily Világgazdaság reported. Géza Martos CEO of the company said that Gyulai Húskombinát has been making loss for three years, and the trend looks set to continue. The company stopped slaughtering cattle a year ago, and will now close its hog slaughterhouse, which earlier processed 600,000 hogs a year. Gyulai Húskombinát is the country's fourth-biggest meat company, with annual sales of about Ft14billion. Martos said Gyulai Húskombinát is not in talks with Sándor Csányi, indirect owner of Hungarys biggest meat conglomerate, Pick Szeged and Délhús, nor with Gyula Román, who heads Hungary's third-biggest group of meat processors. Both men earlier said they were interested in buying the company.
