Greenpeace activists held a demonstration in front of Parliament on Tuesday, protesting against extending the operation of Hungary's single nuclear power station at Paks. Some 20 activists protested against a cabinet decision taken in early September paving the way for Hungary's 20-year-old nuclear power plant to remain in operation for another 30 years. Police said they removed the demonstrators because they had not asked for permission to demonstrate. Last week 22 green lobby groups called on MPs in an open letter to reject the cabinet decision, which is currently being debated. The government said earlier that tests at the station 100 km south of Budapest, which provides 40% of Hungary's electricity, had shown the plant could operate safely until 2035.
