Hungary's government plans to provide loans at a discount rate for farmers who want to buy arable land now being managed by the state, daily Népszabadság reported, citing Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány. Hungary has hundreds of thousands of hectares of state land and the government wants to use that to enable small-scale farmers to expand, Gyurcsány said. Gyurcsány's government is facing elections in seven months. The governing Socialists are trailing the opposition Fidesz party by 4 percentage points among likely voters, the pollster Szonda Ipsos said on September 23.
