Hungary?s five most powerful fixed-line phone companies cannot raise their monthly subscription fees more than the 4.5% annual inflation rate this year, the National Telecommunications Authority (NHH) ruled. The telecom market regulator identified five phone service providers as players with significant market power, including Matáv Rt, Invitel Rt, Hungarotel Rt, Emitel Rt and Monor Phone Company Rt. These fall under the so-called ?ban on unjustifiably high fees? in NHH terminology, which means that in 2005 they must not raise their monthly access fees by more than last year?s 4.5% consumer price hike. Moreoever, the authority ruled that the five dominant players will have to give subscribers a free choice between service providers every time they make a call.
