Farmers? income narrows as farmgate prices fall dramatically

Agricultural producer prices fell 12.9% between January and March than in Q1 2004, while the price of products and services used in farming decreased by only 2.3%, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported. The farmgate price of crops declined by 28.8% percent year-on-year (with grains, vegetables, fruits and potato becoming 42%, 16.5%, 11.1% and over 50% less expensive), while that of animal products rose by 9.2%. The ratio of farmgate prices and farmers? expenditure was 89.1, which means farmers? income situation continues to decline.
