Excise officials seized roughly 25,000 cartons of contraband cigarettes worth about ?500,000 on Friday in four raids in various parts of the country. A raid on a Budapest home yielded 2,000 cartons, while another sting at a warehouse in Budapest resulted in seizure of 7,000. In Gyula, southeast Hungary, officials apprehended a Hungarian national as he was packing some 5,000 cartons into a minibus from his garage. In a fourth action, this one at the Gyula border crossing with Romania, officials checked through a tractor trailer with Dutch plates ostensibly carrying clothing, to find 10,000 cartons. None of the cigarettes carried tax stamps or seals, so all perpetrators were reported to police for action.
