Commemorations of the 49th anniversary of the ill-fated revolution and freedom fight of 1956 began in Budapest on Sunday with the raising of the national flag in front of parliament. Heading the dignitaries present for the ceremony were President László Sólyom, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány, Speaker of Parliament Katalin Szili, Constitution Court President András Holló and Supreme Court Chief Justice Zoltán Lomnici. Following this, the gathering reassembled at nearby Martyrs' Square to remember Imre Nagy, prime minister during the revolution who was later executed, and others who died during and after the uprising.
