Coalition party calls to halt Malév sale

Hungary's junior coalition party is calling on the government to cancel the planned sale of national airline Malév Rt, the daily Népszabadság reported citing Alliance of Free Democrats (SZDSZ) chairman Gábor Kuncze. The government should declare the sale unsuccessful, as none of the bidders will fully carry out Hungary’s goals for the airline, Kuncze said. Hungary's two opposition parties also oppose the sale, the paper said. This is Hungary’s sixth attempt to sell the unprofitable carrier since the change of regimes in 1989. The government is currently negotiating with Russia's KrasAir, which placed the highest of three bids. The government expects the buyer to take over debts exceeding Ft 36 billion, invest in upgrading Malév, keep most of the jobs and maintain national airline status.
