2010 euro target must be kept, Kuncze urges

Junior governing SZDSZ party leader Gábor Kuncze on Wednesday asked business leaders to support his party's efforts to persuade the government not to renege on the target of joining the euro zone in 2010. “You are welcome to join our initiative to convince the government of the importance of adopting the euro,” Kuncze said. Though it was believed that the government supported the idea of euro zone entry in 2010, it appears the target no longer has the backing of either conservative or governing Socialist circles, Kuncze noted in an open letter sent to the head of the Federation of Entrepreneurs and Employers, the president of Employers and Industrialists, the president of the Budapest Stock Exchange and the chair of the Chamber of Commerce. “We liberals think that it is a grave mistake [to ditch the 2010 target],” said Kuncze. “Adopting the euro must not be influenced by the upcoming elections.”
