PM: Slovakia-Hungary gas connection this month

History

The interconnector linking Hungary's and Slovakia's natural gas networks will be inaugurated before the end of this month, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Thursday. Speaking after an extraordinary European Union summit on Ukraine in Brussels, Orbán said that full operation of the interconnector is expected on January 1, 2015.

The new link will also connect Hungary's gas distribution network with the Czech Republic, reducing Hungary's dependency on Russian natural gas supplies, Orbán said.

The interconnector is 115 kilometers long, with 95 km in Hungary and 20 km in Slovakia. Its cost was set at over €160 million by the government in October 2013 when the schedule of trial and commercial operation was announced.

Support for the network interconnection was provided in part by a €30 million European Union grant.
