Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó today continued his recent tirades against other European officials with a blast at Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn, who criticized the Polish government for mimicking the strategies of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

“Democracy is about the people, even if the foreign minister of Luxembourg does not like it,” said a statement released by Szijjártó today. According to the statement, in his recent interview with online portal Tageblatt, Jean Asselborn was wrong to criticize the system that Hungarians chose through the democratic process.

During the Tageblatt interview, Asselborn said that the way the Polish government is reducing free speech and abusing its power over the judiciary is reminiscent of Orbán’s government in Hungary.

“We recommend the foreign minister of Luxembourg let Hungarians decide on matters in connection with Hungary, and let Polish people to decide on Poland,” said the statement from Szijjártó.

This latest criticism comes on the heels of the foreign minister’s criticism in recent weeks of officials in Austria, Croatia and Germany, as well as supporters of the idea of a quota system to determine how many asylum seekers each European country should take.
