Hungarians reluctant cinemagoers in EU comparison

History

Though their country boasts a high-profile, fast-growing film production industry, Hungarians are rather infrequent cinemagoers in comparison with citizens of other EU member states, data compiled by Eurostat show, as cited by state news wire MTI.

The percentage of Hungarians aged 16 years or older who went to the cinema at least once in the past twelve months stood at 31%, the latest data from 2015 reveal, according to the EUʼs statistics bureau.

The rate for the EU as a whole was a little over 45%, reaching as high as 64% in the case of Denmark.

The percentage of Hungarians who went to the cinema at least four times in the past year was 11%, under the 18% average for the EU-28 and well behind the French, who led with 29%.

Meanwhile, the percentage of Hungarians who went to a live performance, such as a play, concert or ballet, at least once in the past year also stood at 31%, under the 42% rate for the EU-28.

The survey shows that one quarter of Hungarians attended a sporting event at least once in the past year.
