Mangalitsa promotional campaign starts
The Ministry of Agriculture, the Agricultural Marketing Centre (AMC) and the Hungarian Association of Mangalitsa Breeders launched a campaign on Wednesday to promote pork and Mangalitsa products, according to a report by state news wire MTI.
The campaign runs until the start of Lent, in mid-February.
AMC deputy director Gergely Giczi noted that the impact on the market of African swine fever (AFS) outbreaks had pushed some farm gate prices under cost.
Mangalitsa breeders association head Peter Toth said about 60,000 Mangalitsa hogs are raised each year, accounting for 2% of total hog stock. Exports of Mangalitsa products add up to some HUF 12 billion, he added.
About half of processed Mangalitsa is exported, including 700 tonnes of ham to Spain and 300 tonnes of product to other EU countries as well as markets in Asia, such as Hong Kong and Singapore.
A few big companies control about one-quarter of the Mangalitsa market in Hungary.
