Hungary applies for bird flu funds from World Bank

Hungary has applied for part of a $500 million fund the World Bank created to support efforts to halt the spread of avian influenza, government spokesman András Batiz announced.

The money will be used to compensate poultry farmers for losses if their flocks need to be destroyed, or to finance a public awareness campaign on the dangers of the H5N1 virus Batiz said. The Hungarian government has already allocated more than 6 billion forint ($28 million) to fight bird flu, which has killed at least 45 wild birds in Hungary. The disease has not yet reached the domestic poultry supply.
