Hungary to remain GMO-free, Deputy State Secretary promises
Hungary intends to preserve its ban on cultivation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the country, Rural Development Ministry Deputy State Secretary Katalin Tóth confirmed on Wednesday.
Earlier, Tóth stated on November 7 that Hungary would retain its prohibition on GMOs after the Council of the European Union announced it would consider a proposal to permit the production of Pioneer 1507 GMO maize in member states.
The European Union currently permits the cultivation of a single GMO -- Monsanto MON 810 maize -- in EU member states. This type of GMO maize is cultivated in Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania.
Hungary and the following other European Union member states currently prohibit the cultivation of GMOs: Germany, Austria, Italy, Poland, Bulgaria, Greece and Luxembourg.
