Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has delivered its first engine-plus-storage hybrid installation worldwide and its first Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) energy storage project in Europe, to Sinergy Kft., a subsidiary of Alteo Group, in Budapest.

Wärtsiläʼs energy storage solutions enable power companies and developers to integrate and optimize a diverse mix of grid resources and deliver flexibility, reliability and resilience for customers seeking best-in-class system performance, according to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal.

The existing power plant, running on three Wärtsilä W34SG engines, is now optimized with an energy storage solution that also incorporates GEMS, an industry-leading energy management system from Greensmith Energy, a Wärtsilä company. The installation will enable Alteo to participate in the electricity market by providing frequency and secondary regulation to the national grid operating in virtual power plant mode.

“The project was accomplished smoothly, owing to the great engineering work of Greensmith,” said Péter Luczay, director of wholesale energy trading and virtual power plant (VPP) management at Alteo. “The integration of the energy storage system is a huge step in Alteo’s VPP development and we strongly believe that this technology has opened up new opportunities to successfully respond to upcoming challenges.”

GEMS, a critical component of Wärtsilä’s engine-plus-storage hybrid installation, analyses changes in market conditions and rate structures, effectively "future-proofing" energy storage investments for both power developers and regulated utilities, claims the press release. Ancillary services are a proven application provided by GEMS, generating revenue for Alteo, it adds.

“The Alteo project is a great demonstration of Wärtsilä’s EPC expertise and Greensmith’s unparalleled software and energy storage knowledge benefitting the customer and providing new opportunities in the market,” said Markus Ehrström, business development manager at Wärtsilä Energy Solutions. “Wärtsilä is a global energy systems integrator and in the future we will continue to see more examples of energy storage and sophisticated software controls being paired with power plants, wind, buildings and hydro to create hybrid solutions that cut carbon, lower costs and optimize generation.”

Alteo Group is a Hungary-based energy service provider and trading company listed on the Budapest Stock Exchange since 2010. Its business embraces renewable and natural gas-based energy generation, energy trading, and tailor-made energy services for companies. As an energy retailer, its partners include local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large companies alike.

Wärtsilä closed the acquisition of Greensmith Energy Management Systems Inc. in July 2017. As a leading provider of energy storage software and integration services, Greensmith’s mission is to make energy storage a fundamental part of a more resilient, intelligent and distributed energy infrastructure, says the press release.

Wärtsilä Energy Solutions is a leading global energy system integrator offering a broad range of environmentally sound solutions, the company adds. At the end of 2017, Wärtsilä had 67 GW of installed power plant capacity in 177 countries around the world.
