The national “TeSzedd!” (lit. “You Pick It!”) refuse collection drive has closed for the year, with a record 1,025 settlements joining the initiative in 2013, Environmental Affairs Minister Zoltán Illés announced last week.

The campaign attracted more than 100,000 volunteers who helped clean up neighborhood areas of between 5,000 to 6,000 tons of litter beginning on September 14. Illés stated that recent opinion polls show the Hungarian population to be getting more and more environmentally conscious, highlighting the role of education in this respect as well as government incentives to promote environmental awareness.

Illés also called for installation of a “Green Commando” system in which authorities, including the Ministry for Rural Development and the National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV), would come together to seek action against illegal dumping of waste. TeSzedd! was first organized in 2011.
