One-fifth of heating, cooling energy renewable in Hungary

In 2017, renewable energy accounted for 19.6% of the total energy used for heating and cooling in Hungary, 0.1% above the EU average, according to the EUʼs official statistical agency, Eurostat.

Eurostat says that the 2017 data are a significant improvement compared to the EU average of 10.4% in 2004, with increases in industrial sectors, services and households all contributing to the growth.
Eurostat took aerothermal, geothermal and hydrothermal heat energy captured by heat pumps into account as well.
The ratio of renewable energy used for heating and cooling exceeded 50% in four member states: Sweden (69.1%), Finland (54.8%), Latvia (54.6%), and Estonia (51.6%).
In a regional comparison, the ratio in Hungary was over that in Poland and Slovakia, at 14.5% and 9.8%, respectively, but a hair under the 19.7% ratio in the Czech Republic.
The worst ratios were measured in the Netherlands (5.9%), Ireland (6.9%), and the U.K. (7.5%).
