New reg. requirement for foreign commercial vehicles

Owners of large commercial vehicles registered abroad are required to enter their vehicle environmental classification in the system of national toll operator NÚSZ from February 3, NÚSZ said on its website, as reported by state news wire MTI.

NÚSZ said some 10,000 vehiclesʼ environmental classifications have been entered since the registration system was rolled out in December. It is collecting the data to ensure the accurate calculation of tolls for its new toll schedule, which seeks to better implement the "polluter pays" principle by favoring cleaner-running engines.

Under the new schedule, vehicles are divided into three groups: Category A (vehicles with a EURO V engine or higher); Category B (vehicles with a EURO II, EURO III, or EURO IV engine); and Category C (vehicles with a EURO I engine or worse).

NÚSZ noted that the registration measures will affect owners of Hungarian-registered vehicles only from the second half of 2019, at the earliest, because the toll operator has access to national vehicle registration records for its database.
