Hungary needs 4,000 MW of new power capacity in 15 years

MAVIR, the Hungarian transmission system operator (TSO), estimates that at least 4,000 MW of new power plant capacity will need to be built in the coming 15 years, state news wire MTI reported.

MAVIR said most of the capacity would be necessary to replace power plants that reach the end of their lifespans, as it calculates that electricity consumption will rise at a rate equivalent to only 50-60% of annual GDP growth.

Big power plants in Hungary had a nominal capacity of 6,996 MW at the end of 2017. Small power plantsʼ capacity stood at 1,621 MW.
