Watermelon exports could reach 70,000 tons
Hungarian farmers are planning on exporting 60,000 - 70,000 tons of watermelon this year, chiefly to Poland, Czech Republic and Germany, Ferenc Ledo, head of professional association FruitVeb, told state-owned news channel M1 yesterday.
Watermelon harvest in the country is expected to reach some 220,000-240,000 tons this year, with a per kilogram price of HUF 120-150 at the start of the season and HUF 70-80 per kilogram at the end of July.
Ledo noted that Hungarian farmers are growing watermelons on approximately 6,000 hectares, about the same as last year during which season harvest reached 220,000 tons.
