Vértes Power Plant to build gas-fuel facility

Green Energy

Vértes Power Plant, owned by the Hungarian state’s Hungarian Electricity Works (MVM), is planning to build a temporary gas engine power plant by January 2016 in Oroszlány in northern Hungary, CEO András Kovács said late yesterday.

Speaking to the deputies of the local council of Oroszlány, the CEO said that tests for a planned waste-based renewable fuel plant, which would replace the present coal-based plant are underway.

Vértes Power Plant must cease to operate as a coal-fuelled power plant from December 31, 2015 due to stricter environmental regulations but it has an obligation to provide district heating and hot water to 5,000 local households and public institutions by the end of 2020, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

The CEO said that should experiments be unsuccessful, MVM is expected to shut down the plant, which also generates electricity, and will only continue operating the part of the facility, which provides heating services.

According to the proposal prepared for the council deputies, the power plant blocks that will become active from 2016 will be worth more than HUF 10 bln, MTI said, adding that the final shutdown, dismantling and reinstallation of the power plant would cost HUF 37 bln. Up to HUF 19.5 bln of the costs would be covered by the subsidies built into the price of electricity. According to MTI’s calculations, the shutdown would result in the loss of 540 jobs.

With the conversion to renewable fuel, the power plant would require 400,000 tonnes of selected and processed waste per year. The new fuel would be introduced after the environmental assessments have been completed and licenses obtained. Until then, district heating in the area will be supplied by the gas power plant.
