In June 2018, the number of nights spent by international tourists decreased by 1.0%, while nights spent by domestic tourists increased by 0.2% compared to a year earlier, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported Thursday. Bad weather contributed to the low figures, as well as the absence of a long weekend in June.
Commercial accommodation establishments saw an overall 0.4% decrease in tourism nights in June 2018, the KSH data show.
In June 2018, compared to the same month of the previous year, the number of international tourist arrivals grew by 2.7% to more than 558,000. Tourism nights spent by foreign citizens decreased by 1.0% to 1.41 million. In hotels, accounting for 82% of tourism nights, the rate of growth was 0.1%. The number of foreign tourism nights rose in the tourism regions of Budapest-Central Danube, Central Transdanubia and Lake Tisza, and fell in others.
The number of domestic tourist arrivals increased by 0.5% and that of domestic tourism nights grew by 0.2% to more than 1.53 million.
Accommodation establishments registered 6.0% fewer domestic tourism nights at Lake Balaton, and the share of tourism nights spent at Lake Balaton within total domestic turnover thus fell from 30% to 28%.
Room occupancy in hotels in June increased by 0.9 of a percentage point year-on-year to 64.8%.
The total gross revenues of accommodation establishments increased by 6.7% to HUF 47 billion; within this, accommodation fee revenues increased by 5.0% (to HUF 28 bln), and catering revenues by 30% (to HUF 11 bln), while other revenues fell by 11% (to HUF 8 bln) at current prices. The amount of accommodation fee revenues from foreign visitors increased by 5.5%, while revenues from domestic visitors rose by 4.1%.
In January–June 2018, compared to the first half of 2017, the number of tourism nights spent in commercial accommodation in Hungary grew by 5.3% to a total of nearly 13 million. Foreign guests spent 4.0% more (nearly 6.7 mln) and domestic guests 6.8% more (almost 6.3 mln) nights in accommodation establishments. Room occupancy in hotels increased by 2.4 percentage points to 57.2%.
Total gross sales of accommodation establishments grew by 10.4% at current prices to HUF 218 bln in January-June. Within this, accommodation revenues increased by 9.0% to nearly HUF 125 bln.
On June 30, 2018, compared to the same date of the previous year, the number of accommodation establishments was 3,321, with a total of 91,500 available rooms, practically unchanged.
Data for turnover at commercial accommodation establishments in July 2018 will be published by the KSH on September 11.
