Hungarian farmersʼ sweet corn crop is expected to be above average this year, helped by favorable weather, an industry insider told state news agency MTI on Thursday.

János Pereczes, a regional manager for Syngenta, which sells sweet corn seeds, said the mild winter and the warm spring were good for planting. Rain was sufficient, even for fields which are not irrigated, he added.

Local producers are ready to turn out about half a million tonnes of sweet corn this year, according to Syngenta. Export sales could be lifted by weak output of sweet peas in Europe.

Hungary is the worldʼs second biggest producer of sweet corn after the United States, noted MTI. Sweet corn is grown on an area of about 35,000 hectares.
