The harvest of fall wheat has begun and experts predict the summer-crop harvest will be good to average, Agriculture Ministry state secretary György Czerván said yesterday, according to Hungarian news agency MTI .

Fall wheat will be harvested on 966,000 hectares, 72,000 hectares less than last year and the amount harvested is expected to reach 4.8-4.9 million tons, Czerván said.

Fall barley yields will be approximately 4.8 tons per hectare and calculating with 270,000 hectares of sowed land, the harvest should be close to 1.3 million tons.

Rape seed harvest could reach 717,000 tons, around 200,000 tons more than in 2015. Rape seed will be harvested on 254,000 hectares of land.

The price of milling quality wheat is currently around HUF 43,500 per ton, down from HUF 48,000 per ton from a year earlier. The price of corn meanwhile has increased to HUF 52,000 per ton from HUF 41,000 per ton.
