Strong showing puts accommodation industry up 7.1%

The Central Statistics Office (KSH) released some numbers on Hungary’s tourist accommodation industries in November 2013, with the key figure a 7.1% increase year-on-year in arrivals – good news leading up to strong showings figured for December.

KSH further reported that in November 2013, the number of both international- and domestic-originating tourism nights rose 4.9% and 9.5%, respectively, y.o.y. The gross revenues of accommodation establishments increased 12%.

For the month, foreign guests spent 733,000 nights in accommodation establishments, 4.9% y.o.y. increase; the number of guests itself increased 4.6% y.o.y., though KSH did not provide specific statistics here.

Among foreign tourists, substantial y.o.y. increases were seen in the number of Russian and American tourists, with upticks of 39% and 21%, respectively. Also notably up were the number of visitors from the Czech Republic (8.1%), Austria (4.6%) and Romania (1.6%); decreases were seen among tourist rolls from the UK (8.6%) and Germany (3.3%).

Meanwhile, domestic tourism rose in all regions except Western Transdanubia. In hotels accounting for 80% of domestic guest arrivals, the number of tourism nights was up by 9.8%. The overall occupancy rate in these hotels was 47%, a 3% upswing from November 2012. Five-star hotels showed an occupancy rate of 65% and spa hotels were 64% booked in the month.

KSH calculated the total gross revenue of the accommodation industry at HUF 22 billion for November; catering services generated sales of HUF 5.3 billion.

As of December 1, 2013, the number of accommodation establishments operating in Hungary was 2,209, including 911 hotels.
