The number of book titles published in Hungary reached 14,700 last year, the highest number since 2010, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said in a summary of data.

The number of titles published in the first quarter of 2021 was 4,180, still very high compared to the same periods of the previous years.

Almost one-third of Hungarians said they spent more time reading in 2020 than in the previous year, according to a joint survey by the Hungarian book publishers' association MKKE and research institute Tárki.

At the same time, the number of copies published fell to 28 million in 2020 from 31.7 million a year earlier.

Among book titles published in 2020, academic works accounted for 33%, works of fiction for 27%, textbooks for 14% and children's books for 13%.

In 2020, books published in Hungarian made up 90% of the total, with books published in English accounting for 2.7% and German for 0.9%.

Some 70% of all titles were authored by Hungarians, 10% by Americans, 5.1% by British and 3.5% by German authors.
