Farm gate prices up 7.1% yr/yr in January-May

Farm gate prices in Hungary rose 7.1% year on year in January-May, with crop prices increasing 14.1% and livestock and animal product prices remaining unchanged, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported on Wednesday.

In May alone, farm gate prices rose 11.6% year on year, with crop prices rising 19.4% and livestock and animal product prices up 1.8%. Farm gate prices rose 0.7% in 2005, with crop prices down 0.6% and livestock and animal product prices up 1.8%.
Farm gate prices of cereals rose 6.9% in January-May compared to the same period a year earlier. Farm gate prices of vegetables increased 23.1% and those of fruit rose 21.6%. The price of onions rose 38% and the price of peas was up 42%. Prices for tomatoes and cucumbers both fell 20%, because of a surge in supply. Prices of last year's apples rose 32.9% and the price of cherries fell 2.9%. Strawberry prices were up 14.5% and the price of potatoes increased 56.7%, after falling more than 50% in January-May 2005 compared to the same period a year earlier.
Livestock prices increased 0.2% year on year in January-May. In January-May 2005, livestock prices rose a marked 9% compared to the same period in the previous year. Prices for live cattle and hogs increased 15.6 and 1.7%, respectively. Alone in May, hog prices rose 6.8%. Poultry prices fell 6% during the period and animal products prices were down 0.3%. Milk prices were up 3.3% and egg prices increased 8.2%.
