Bulgaria's inflation edged down to 16.4% year-on-year in January, from 16.9% in December, the Sofia-based National Statistical Institute (NSI) said on Wednesday.
This was the lowest rate since May of 2022, mainly due to a slowdown in the prices of recreation and culture (9.6% vs 14.8% in December), food & non-alcoholic beverages (24.9% vs 26.1%) and housing & utilities (18.8% vs 19.9%).
Meanwhile, costs accelerated for transport (10% vs 8.1%), health (10% vs 8.7%) and education (11.5% vs 10.3%). On a monthly comparison basis, inflation went up to 1.1% in January from 0.9% in December.
The monthly increase was largely due to higher prices in transport, by 2.3%, followed by those for miscellaneous goods and services, and food and non-alcoholic beverages.
EU harmonized inflation, or HICP, was 14.1% in January compared to the same month of 2022 and 1% higher than in December.
