German carmaker Mercedes-Benz has started production at a 23,000 sqm press plant in Kecskemét (82 km southeast of Budapest), Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Hungary said on Wednesday, according to state news wire MTI.

The press plant, the second at the Hungarian base, took two years to build. It will turn out parts for compact vehicles made in Kecskemét as well as parts for the global production network of Mercedes-Benz.

Almost all of the aluminum waste generated at the plant will be recycled.

Mercedes-Benz is plowing over EUR 1 billion into the base in Kecskemet "to equip it for future tasks", while making the switch to renewable energy sources.

Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Hungary had net sales revenue of EUR 3.1 bln last year, public records show.
