MÁV delays putting new suburban trains into operation

Analysis

Hungary's state railways MÁV Rt has given up plans to put its new suburban trains into operation next spring, national daily Népszabadság said on Thursday. Népszabadság said Switzerland's Stadler AG will deliver its first vehicles in February 2007 at the earliest. But MÁV will be able to test one of the power-train carriages as part of a hire agreement as early as December this year. The Ft 100 bln contract signed between MÁV and Stadler in August for the delivery and maintenance of 30 multiple train units had been planned for spring 2006. However, it is uncertain when the financing agreement required for the payment of the vehicles will be signed. Neither is known when the tender invited by MÁV in November for a €144.6 mln loan will be closed. MÁV plans to sign a contract with the winning bidder of the public purchase tender in February at the latest. Thirteen banks purchased the tender documentation, but it is still uncertain how many will submit bids on December 12.
