Hungary to announce details of mobile frequency tender Friday

The tender is made possible by amendments to the electronic telecommunications act that came into force earlier in the week. The changes bring Hungarian law in line with European Union norms and give retail and corporate clients more rights in the areas of land line, mobile and internet services, the NMHH said on Thursday.

The framework regulations on the distribution of the frequencies in the 900MHz band allow market players that have no presence on Hungary's mobile market to bid for the 5MHz frequency in the 10.8MHz block. If no acceptable offer for the frequency is made, it may be distributed among Hungary's existing mobile service providers, the NMHH said.

At present, the only mobile telecommunications service providers in Hungary are Deutsche Telekom unit Magyar Telekom, and the units of Telenor and Vodafone.
