Hungary lacks child psychiatrists

Analysis

There are far too few child psychiatrists operating in Hungary and most of them are already close to retirement age, while the mental condition of Hungarian children go from bad to worse, online news portal Origo said citing Parliamentary Commissioner for Civil Rights Máté Szabó.

Due to the lack of professional care, children’s right to health and healthcare is infringed, Szabó said, adding that ”the government is liable for making effective steps” in this issue. In some regions of the country, children are treated at the adult department of psychiatry due to the lack of infrastructure and human resources, Szabó noted. Also, parents cannot be together with their child at the hospital, although this right is laid down in law, he added.
