Heavy trucks’ tax on using main roads come 2008 in Hungary

Hungary has plans to levy a road tax, similar to motorway toll stickers, on heavy-goods trucks from next year, said national daily Népszabadság on Wednesday. The Economy Ministry wants to charge trucks weighing over 7.5 tons for using more than 50 of Hungary's main roads, most of them trans-boundary routes. Drivers who avoid making the payment face heavy fines. Fines will also be levied on drivers who make diversions from the main roads and use secondary roads, said the paper. The plan is still awaiting approval, pending a decision on introducing an appropriate electronic payment system based on distance travelled rather than a fixed fee. The earliest date likely for introducing the tax is the start of 2008 due to delays in implementing the system, said the paper. (Mti-Eco)
