Gov’t to introduce lorry sticker fee on main roads

Analysis

The government will introduce a sticker fee for trucks over 12 tons on Hungary's main roads, in addition to motorway sticker fees, from April 2007.

From the start of 2008, the sticker fee will also be introduced for trucks over 3.5 tons, head of department at the Ministry of Economy and Transport Erika Bozzay said on Friday.
The fees are being introduced to get lorries from the main roads onto the motorways, Bozzay said. Lorry traffic is expected to rise considerably in Hungary after Romania and Bulgaria join the EU.
She said the government would assess the possibility of introducing a per-use toll, to be paid electronically, from 2008.
Revenue from the sticker fees will be used for road upkeep.
