GE negotiating to buy up to 50 Boeing jets

Analysis

General Electric Co., the world’s biggest aircraft lessor, is in talks with Chicago-based Boeing Co. to buy 40 to 50 of its 737 jetliners to meet demand from airlines upgrading their fleets, a person familiar with the negotiations said Monday.

The order might be valued at as much as $3.52 billion, based on a list price of $70.5 million for a 737-800 model posted on Boeing’s Web site. List prices don’t include discounts traditionally given to large customers, such as General Electric Co.. Aircraft lessors are benefiting from record rates as airlines demand more planes, than Boeing and Airbus can produce. In December, GE Commercial Aviation Services ordered 53 737-800’s. Spokesmen for Boeing and GE declined to comment, citing policies at their respective companies. (Chicago Tribune)
