Fidesz MPs pushing bill to change law on door-to-door campaigning
Fidesz MPs András Cser-Palkovics and Imre Vas yesterday submitted a bill to Parliament that would legalise door-to-door collection of signatures. Data protection chief Attila Péterfalvi last week declared that a planned Fidesz campaign to collect signatures door-to-door in favour of lower utility rates could violate the law against maintaining lists of voters and their addresses. The bill states that such activity would be permitted if the data is handled properly and if the purpose is non-commercial. The two MPs argued that existing laws make no provision for striking a balance between the right to freedom of expression and the right to privacy. Péterfalvi also cited the risk that “negative lists” could be drawn up of those who do sign up to such initiatives.
