Fidesz calls for district heating subsidies

Analysis

The main opposition party Fidesz has demanded the government provides subsidies for district heating on top of its new subsidy scheme for gas, deputy leader Zoltán Pokorni told the press on Friday.

Pokorni said the new system to be introduced as of next year, in which the government gradually plans to pull out of subsidizing gas services by 2008, will hit people in high-density housing most, as they are the ones who use district heating the most. District heating suppliers, who are to lose earlier government subsidies for next year, are expected to raise their prices by as much as 45% from January, after a rise of 8.5% already implemented in the summer of 2006, Pokorni said. A new subsidy for heating to be offered by the government will not offset these rising costs, he said.
