Eurozone inflation steady in June at 1.9%
The eurozone inflation remained at 1.9% in June, unchanged for the fourth month, the European Union's statistics bureau Eurostat said.
The annual inflation in the 13-nation bloc sharing the same currency was in line with economists' forecasts. It has been for 10 consecutive months that the figure stayed below the two% ceiling preferred by the European Central Bank (ECB) to maintain price stability. Though prices were relatively under control, the ECB is still concerned about mid-term risks in face of a brisk economy.
The ECB raised its benchmark interest rate by another quarter percentage point to 4% earlier this month, the eighth time since last December. It is widely expected to raise its rate again in September. Eurostat will release an updated figure for June, with breakdown of different components and specific countries, on July 16.
