Competition Office terminates procedure on “melon cartel”

Hungary's Competition Office (GVH) on Friday said it terminated a procedure launched against a number of retailers and the Hungarian Melon Growers Association because “its continuation may not have ensured the efficient protection of the public interest.” GVH said legislation was amended after the launch of the procedure that requires the office to consult with the rural development minister on any antitrust actions affecting the farm sector. GVH contacted the minister on the matter and was informed that cartel activity could not be established in the case.
