Analysis

Confidence slipped slightly in August at Hungary's biggest companies, but improved at SMEs, the latest measure of confidence by Ecostat shows.

Still, sentiment at both big and small companies was well under levels in August a year ago. Ecosat's TOP-100 index, a measure of confidence among Hungary's 100 biggest companies, fell 1 point to 43 in August from July. Meanwhile, Ecostat's index for SME confidence rose 4 points to 41. In August 2005, the TOP-100 index showed 55 and the SME index was at 50.7.
The TOP-100 index has shown declining confidence since June. In August, the index slipped on worsening short-term prospects. The SME index showed worsening sentiment in May and July.
