‘Son of Saul’ nominated for an Oscar
Hungarian director László Nemes’ “Son of Saul” was one of five films nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category today.

The film, which addresses the horrors of Auschwitz through a micro-narrative, is the first feature from the Hungarian director and was the winner of the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival this year. “Son of Saul” also won a Golden Globe award on Sunday.
A former assistant to renowned Hungarian director Béla Tarr, Nemes studied film in New York and wrote and directed three award-winning shorts including “With a Little Patience” and “The Counterpart” prior to writing and directing his latest award-winning film.
Two Hungarian films have won Oscars to date: “The Fly”, a short film directed by Ferenc Rófusz, won in 1981, and “Mephisto”, directed by István Szabó, won in 1982.
