Spar opens four more stores at OMV gas stations

Retail

With the opening of four new stores at OMV gas stations, Austrian retailer Spar currently has 45 units operating in gas stations, and those stores are legally entitled to remain open on Sundays despite the Sunday closure law, Hungarian online daily hvg.hu reported today.

Following this trend, Hungarian oil and gas company MOL has opened ten Fresh Corner stores, while Shell has two Tesco Express stores and Agip has one gas station operating a Coop retail store, hvg.hu said.

These stores do not fall under legislation which came into effect on March 15, prohibiting retailers larger than 400 sqms from opening on Sundays. According to a study carried out by hvg.hu in August, these smaller units of big retail chains located in gas stations had similar and sometimes lower prices than family-run businesses nearby.
