Radioactive waste manager dismisses speculation on cost of disposal facility

Hungaryʼs state-owned company for managing radioactive waste, RHK, on Friday dismissed speculation in a report in daily Népszabadság a day earlier that a permanent storage facility for spent nuclear fuel could cost as much as HUF 1.7 trillion.

The paper had said the amount was "half of the price of the Paks expansion", referring to a planned upgrade of Hungaryʼs sole nuclear power plant. RHK said a storage facility for high-level waste is expected to cost about HUF 745 bln, including construction, operation and oversight, and closure, a period spanning 70 years. It said that the figure cited by Népszabadság covers the entire expenditure of the Central Nuclear Financial Fund, only part of which is for the storage facility.
