Quickly growing organic farming still under EU average

The proportion of agricultural area in Hungary utilized for organic farming stood at 3.7% in 2017, a little more than half of the 7.0% average rate for the European Union as a whole, data compiled by the EUʼs stats office Eurostat show, as reported by state news wire MTI.

The rate was 14.1% in the Czech Republic, 9.9% in Slovakia, and 3.4% in Poland. The highest rate in the EU (23.4%) was in Austria.

In absolute terms, there were 199,700 hectares of utilized agricultural area in Hungary given over to organic farming, up 53% from 2012, among the fastest rates of growth in the region and in Europe.

The organic farming area in the Czech Republic stood at 496,300 hectares. There were 495,000 hectares of organic farmland in Poland, and 189,100 hectares in Slovakia.

Organic farming is a way of agricultural production which uses organic production methods and places the highest emphasis on environmental and wildlife protection as well as animal welfare considerations, noted MTI.
