While the number of workplace accidents decreased slightly, within this the number of fatalities grew quite sharply in the first half of 2017, according to a report from the labor supervision department of the Ministry for National Economy, as summarized in a report on online news portal index.hu.

In the first half of 2017, some 9,969 workers in Hungary were incapacitated for longer than three days as a result of accidents in the workplace, as compared to 10,276 in the corresponding period of last year.

At the same time, however, the number of fatal workplace accidents rose to 45 in the first six months of 2017, compared to 36 in H1 2016. According to workplace safety authorities, 31.1% of workers are employed under seriously irregular conditions.

Some 7.35% of instances of employer negligence related to deficiencies in electrical safety, while 7.13% were attributed to inadequate working tools. The breaking of rules relating to the evaluation of risks with respect to dangerous substances was also a frequent occurrence, as was the lack of knowledge of workplace protection measures.

Of the sectors of the economy, the engineering industry was the most prone to accidents, seeing a total of 2,044 incidents in January-June. The processing industry was next on the list, followed by the sector of transport, warehousing, post and telecommunications. Construction and agriculture also saw significant numbers of accidents, some of them fatal.

Unsurprisingly, the greatest number of workplace accidents took place in Budapest, followed by Pest and Fejér counties. The fewest accidents were seen in Tolna and Nógrád counties.

More than 3,400 of total accidents in the first half occurred at companies employing fewer than 250 people. The group most affected by accidents was those aged 35-44.

Supervisory authorities handed down more than HUF 55 million in fines in the first six months for breaches of workplace protection measures, index.hu added.
