KSH: Unemployment decreases to 9.1% in 2013
From the Central Statistics Office (KSH): In the fourth quarter of 2013, the number of unemployed people was 403,000, some 65,000 fewer than in the same period of 2012; the unemployment rate meanwhile decreased by 1.6% year-on-year to 9.1%.
Through December 2013, the number of 15- to 74-year-old unemployed males was 213,000, 42,000 fewer than a year earlier, a decrease of 1.9% y.o.y. to 8.9%. The number of unemployed women was 190,000 and their unemployment rate was 9.4%, which was 1.2% lower than in the corresponding period a year earlier.
Among those unemployed in the quarter, 54.9% had been searching for a job for one year or longer. The average duration of unemployment was 19.7 months.
Of the seven statistical regions, three (Central Transdanubia, Western Transdanubia and Southern Transdanubia) had an unemployment rate below 8%. All regions except the Southern Great Plain saw a decrease in unemployment in the last quarter of the year.
In all, a total of 107,000 more y.o.y. were employed by year’s end.
According to National Labor Office (NMH) data, at the end of 2013, the total number of registered jobseekers was 414,000, 27.2% less y.o.y.
In the interests of equal time, BBJ reminds readers of opposition party MSzP MP Sándor Burány’s contention that KSH regularly “cosmeticizes” employment statistics, including classes such as illegally-employed workers, the very temporarily employed (“even for one day,” said Burány) and those working in border towns outside of Hungary.
