Tourism

The number of guest nights in Hungary saw a year-on-year rise of 4.9% in June, with guest nights spent by Hungarians increasing by 3.9% and those spent by foreigners growing by 5.9%, the Hungarian Statistical Office said today in a first reading of data.

KSH said that based on the number of tourist nights in June, the demand grew from the majority of the key source countries. The number of nights spent by tourists from Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States grew by double-digits, by 17%, 21% and 11% respectively, while guests arriving from Czech Republic and Austria spent 1.4% and 6.7% more nights respectively in the country’s accommodation establishments, while German tourists spent 5.9% fewer tourist nights.

Room occupancy in hotels rose by an average of 4 percentage points to 58%, KSH data suggest. The total gross revenue of accommodation establishments was 12% more than a year earlier, reaching HUF 35 bln.

Cardholders spent 5.4% more using Hungary’s national voucher Széchenyi Card Program (SZÉP card), which was accepted by 2,194 units, for a total value of HUF 1.469 bln, KSH data revealed.

It was reported early this month that during the first two months of summer, Hungarians spent more than HUF 14 bln on tourism through the SZÉP Card, however, in the beginning of July, reports suggested that the National Economy Ministry is considering modifying the SZÉP card, as Hungarian hotels are lobbying for restrictions on the type of catering establishments where the card may be used.
