KSH adjusts June retail sales data upwards

Retail sales in Hungary climbed an unadjusted 6.8% in June from the same month a year earlier, decelerating slightly from a 7.1% growth in May, shows a second reading of data released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Thursday. Calendar-adjusted data show retail sales were up 6.4% year-on-year in June.

The unadjusted June figure was revised upwards from the 6.5% published in the first reading on August 3, while the adjusted figure was revised upwards from 6.1%, the KSH noted.

The volume of sales, adjusted for calendar effects, rose by 3.1% in specialized and non-specialized food shops, by 10.9% in non-food retail shops, and by 5.8% in automotive fuel retail.

Within food retail, the volume of sales grew by 3.4% in non-specialized food and beverage shops (accounting for 76% of food retail), and by 2.1% in specialized food, beverage and tobacco stores.

Within the turnover of non-food retail, sales rose in non-specialized shops dealing in manufactured goods (16%), furniture and electrical goods (12%), pharmaceutical, medical and cosmetic goods (9.2%), second-hand goods (7.7%), books, computer equipment and other specialized goods (7.3%), and textiles, clothing and footwear (6.5%).

The volume of mail order and internet retail, accounting for 3.9% of all retail sales and involving a wide range of goods, rose by 25%, continuing a multi-year expansion.

Sales in stores selling motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts and accessories, which are not included in retail data, increased by 12%.

In June 2018, sales across the national retail trade network, as well as in mail order and internet retail, totaled HUF 965 billion at current prices.

Food, drink and tobacco stores accounted for 45% of all retail sales, while the relevant figures for non-food retail shops and the network of petrol stations were 38% and 17%, respectively.

In January–June 2018, compared to the first half of 2017, and adjusted for calendar effects, the volume of sales in retail shops increased by 6.9%. The volume of sales rose by 4.4% in food, drink and tobacco shops, by 9.9% in non-food retail, and by 7.5% in automotive fuel retail.

A first estimate of figures for the retail trade in July 2018 will be published on September 5, with a second, more detailed estimate due on September 21.
