June retail sales growth adjusted down to 5.2%

In June 2017, the volume of sales in retail shops increased by 5.2% according to raw data and by 5.7% adjusted for calendar effects compared to the same month of the previous year, according to a second estimate of data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) Wednesday.

The June unadjusted increase was revised downward from 5.5% in the first estimate released on August 3. The estimate adjusted for calendar effects was likewise revised downwards from 6.0%.

The volume of sales, adjusted for calendar effects, rose by 3.7% in specialized and non-specialized food shops, by 8.3% in non-food retail shops, and by 5.1% in automotive fuel retail.

In January–June 2017, the volume of sales in retail shops – also according to calendar-adjusted data – was 3.9% higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. The volume of sales rose by 2.3% in food, drink and tobacco shops, by 6.5% in non-food retail, and by 3.3% in automotive fuel retail in the first half.

In absolute terms, sales in the national retail trade network, as well as in mail order and internet retail, came to HUF 872 billion in June at current prices. Food, drink and tobacco stores accounted for 47% of all retail sales, while the figures for non-food retail shops and the network of petrol stations were 38% and 15%, respectively.
